All Ruffled Out (and a long winded story too)!

Once upon a time there was a girl that wanted to be a mommy more than anything in the world. When that little girl grew up her greatest wishes came true and she had a beautiful boy and a beautiful girl. Soon she dreamed of becoming a mommy again. Then one day it would seem her wish would be granted. A new little life would come into her world. She planned and dreamed, and dreamed and planned. This new little baby would get a special crib with sweet baby bedding.
After careful planning and designing the fabric was ready to be sewn. But alas, it was not to be. This baby would not make it to this world. So the fabric was carefully folded and put away. It was a long year until that special fabric came out from the closet again. A new baby would be getting a very special look for it's crib.

By now that fabric meant quite a lot to that dreaming mommy. It just had to be made into that special creation. She couldn't wait to see the completed project.  But the worst had happened again. It seemed that there would be no baby to sleep in that crib.

This time the fabric was put away in a far away place to maybe never be seen again. It was not thought of. It was not mentioned. The years passed and the happy family went on not thinking of that silly bit of fabric. What did it matter anyway?

Until one day a third baby. This time the fabric did not come out of the closet. It was forgotten (quite purposefully). That fabric did not come out until  August 2009 when a perfectly perfect little baby boy was born to the happy little big family.

...this is where I stop talking like this is some fairytale. That fabric is so emotional to me. Some would think I would not want to make anything from it, but it's quite the opposite. I was so excited to get to make this darned crib bedding. Unfortunately I am a wee bit of a procrastinator and it has sat until now! Why now? Disney's Ruffle Your Stuff contest of course. Apparently I need a little more motivation than an adorable sweet smelling baby to get me to sew a simple bumper and dust ruffle. I need the eyes of the internet burning into me to get crap done. So with no further ado...
{A little bit about the set}

The fabric line is called Topsy Turvy by Covington in sage (there are other colors) and it is still available after all these years. There are a few coordinating fabrics in the line as well.

The bag hanging on the outside of the crib is based on a toy bag I saw on the Poshtots web site. It's more for decoration because at nearly 8 months the baby will soon be pulling up and pulling out everything in said bag.

 I also needed to make a low profile dust ruffle because eventually the mattress would be lowered and I wanted it to look cute in all stages. So I made a scalloped bed skirt. The petals are only about 6" long. They overlap nicely and since I lined them with a stiff fabric they hang well and look more substantial.

I finished everything on Sunday afternoon just in time for Vinny's last nap. As I lay him in his crib, the bed he has known since birth, he looked around with quiet concentration. I'm not sure what he was thinking, but he fell asleep as usual so I'm happy.

  1. Your baby needs to be kept warm all the time even when he or she is sleeping. To keep your baby warm while they are sleeping baby bedding is important.

  3. Thank you! I forgot to mention in my post that the crib we have is a mini crib (saves a lot of space in our teeny bedrooms) so it's now very cozy with the bumper surrounding him. He seems to like it very much because he's napping better during the day. Nighttime is another story. Don't get me started on that subject.

  4. Sascha! This is a beautiful post--thank you for sharing. I cannot imagine how emotional that fabric is for you, my goodness. But you really did it justice...the set you made is stunning. And I just ADORE that fabric. Seriously. I used Kaufmann's cotton tail toile for our nursery set but really would have been torn had I seen this first! Love it...
