Mijn Boef (my gangster)

This photo about sums up Vincenzo's personality. He's very willful, stubborn, demanding and difficult. He's sure to be the troublemaker at school. At a very young age my father took one look at him and said "boefenkop". Huh? Wha?

My parents are from the Netherlands and according to my dad that one word sums up my little boy. Both my mom and dad have differing translations (typical they don't agree on anything). The consensus was "gangster face". Babelfish agrees somewhat. It literally translates to gangster head. Now gangster sounds rather harsh, but my dad assures me it more like a troublemaking petty thief. Hmmm. How do I feel about all that? Looks like I've got my work cut out for me.

  1. Don't worry. The word 'boef' is mostly used here in The Netherlands in a loving, innocent way about people, mostly children, who look a bit naughty or playful, but not in a serious, criminal way. Our littlest one has a face and expression that makes people cuddle him and tell him he is a 'kleine boef' too. And I can only smile when they do that, and nod. Because he is. :-D

Can you say "boefetje"? Does that word make sense?

  4. Especially in the outtake below, he looks like James Cagney! (Who, before the gangster movies, was a very talented song-and-dance-movie romantic lead!) I think he's precious :)

  5. Oh man, I know where your coming from. My 1 1/2 year old daughter is the same way. Although I have no one to blame but myself - she gets it from me!

  6. That face! What a great pic :D

@ Sascha: it would be 'boefje' for 'little gangster', or 'boeffie' (pronounce 'boofy' as in 'goofy') in more of a slang. My MIL always calls my little one her little boeffie.
